The Edinburgh Karate Academy runs classes in Viewforth and Buckstone.

The following ideals and benefits are pursued:
Health - This aspect of the art is emphasised. This is evidenced by the longevity of many of the masters who train well into their 80s and 90s. Breathing exercises are emphasised along with Ki exercises. All classes start and end in Mokso (meditation).
Fitness - The training is beneficial for fitness. All sessions start with a comprehensive warm up and end with a warm down. This is in a controlled manner and tailoured towards the individual. The student becomes fitter as training progresses. Flexibility, co-ordination and balance are known to improve with Karate training.
Self Defence - This is taught as a part of the art and not in isolation. The katas are often used to teach this aspect of the art.
Kumite - Sparring is only performed after green belt is achieved, under controlled conditions, wearing the correct protective gear. There is no ego involved and it is practiced to help both yourself and and your partner.
Dojo Etiquette - Strict dojo etiquette is followed and students are required to respect each other and society as a whole.
Affiliation - We are affiliated to the prestigous Japanese governing body, IMAF, which is sponsored by the Emperor and Shogun.
The Club is open to new members and we welcome you to get in touch and to attend our sessions.
Currently though, we are only running adults classes (16+).
